John Keating Robin Williams We don’t read and write poetry because it’s is cute. We read and write because we are members of the human race, and the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for. J.K.
Professor out of ordinary rules, anticonventional, sentimental, romantic, he believes that the literature mustn’t be studied by books, but through emotions. He doesn’t want his students “understanding” it, but feel it, he wants they become Freethinkers, that “take all of the life”: CARPE DIEM is his motto!
He and his friends, when they are young, had founded the Dead Poets Society, a group of boys who loved poetry and they felt it “sucking the marrow out of life” (quot. Thoreau)
I love teaching. I don’t want to be anywhere else. Keating loves teaching because, through it, he can convey emotions and passion, the true human worths are directed by our emotions: poetry, beauty, romanticism, love.
But his teaching methods isn’t suitable for the Welton Academy, so devoted to its history and to its worths, and where the matter is the duty, not passions. The boys, forced by parents to frequent it, suffer, feeling a fire in theirself, and Keating is able to pull out what they feel.
Only in their dreams can men be truly free. Twas always thus and always thus will be.
